Redeemer Lutheran Church in Owatonna voted in June to seek a merger with Good Shepherd. Over the summer, the Executive Team has been working to provide clarity and find answers to questions members may have.

Why does Redeemer want to merge?

Since 1883, Redeemer’s desire has been to grow God’s kingdom. As Redeemer’s membership has dwindled, they can no longer support ministry to the community as they have in the past. They would like to keep the assets of the church local and managed by an organization in Owatonna that closely aligns with their beliefs and ministry aims. Redeemer planted Good Shepherd as a mission congregation in 1983, so merging with us would be particularly meaningful.

Where will Redeemer’s members go?

Good Shepherd would receive many members of Redeemer, and some have already transferred their membership. We would provide a welcoming church home and continue some of Redeemer’s ministries. There are several shut-ins; we will investigate adding part-time pastoral care for these members. We believe it will not require calling another full-time pastor. As we care for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, our pastors and staff are considering the best ways to minister to them and provide any additional pastoral care that they may need.

Will Redeemer still have worship services?

No, worship services will only be held here at Good Shepherd. The name of our church will not change.

What will happen to Redeemer’s building?

Good Shepherd would assume ownership of Redeemer’s assets, including the property and building. The property is well maintained and has no immediate problems, but we anticipate significant investment if we managed it long-term. It is not currently our desire to use the property as an extension of Good Shepherd.

What does Good Shepherd need to do next?

The next step is to vote on the potential merger. That meeting will be Sunday, October 20 at 11:00AM. All members ages 16 and up are eligible and encouraged to vote.

What if I still have questions?

Please feel free to contact Pastor Greg, Pastor Dan, or any member of the Executive Team.

Please continue to pray for the members of Redeemer and for God’s wisdom on our congregations, that we may seek His will and make decisions that glorify Him and His kingdom.
